The mental processes leading up to the shutter release are integral to this work. Phil Hurt’s aim is to illustrate visually the pathways along which our minds move. In the ongoing Passer By project, he makes suppositions of passers by. These are his analogous peer group, men his own age, but visual signs connote different lives to his own. By reconstructing his gut reactions photographically, he exposes his own stereotyping, and the ways in which we all reflexively objectify people.
